How Much Should You Tip Your Movers? A Complete Guide

Last Updated On: 5th April 2026, 08:00 pm

Figuring out how much to tip can be confusing. Most of us know that you should tip servers anywhere from 15% to 20% or more if you receive impeccable service. You may know that it's standard to tip a valet anywhere from a couple of dollars to $10 for excellent service. Or that tipping a bellhop at a hotel a dollar or two for each bag is standard.

But should you tip your movers? If you have a move coming up, you've likely wondered whether it's customary to tip your moving crew, and if so, how much. The answer isn't exactly a one-size-fits-all situation. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about whether to tip movers and how much to tip based on your total moving cost or the number of movers on the team.

Is Tipping Expected or Optional?

When you hire a moving company, you're hiring that company to provide a team of workers, trucks, and supplies for your move. So, is tipping movers mandatory, and do you have to tip movers? The answer is no. However, in the U.S., it's customary to tip moving crews.

Moving teams are similar to other service industry workers, like hotel staff or waitstaff. Their jobs are physically challenging, from packing boxes to carting furniture up and down several floors. They also provide customer service, helping ensure your move not only goes smoothly but also that your belongings arrive at your new home in excellent shape.

How Much to Tip Movers

Tipping etiquette can be confusing. However, in most cases, there are standard percentages or formulas for figuring out how to tip without guessing.

When it comes to figuring out how much to tip professional movers, there are a few common formulas that you can use to follow proper tipping etiquette. As a general rule, the average tip for movers will either be 10% to 20% of the total moving cost or a flat rate per mover. If you choose a flat rate based on the total cost, you'll tip the moving team instead of tipping a mover individually.

This total should be based on the total bill but can be before tax. When you opt for a flat rate, you can either tip movers per hour or flat rate for their full day of work. For instance, between $4 and $8 per mover per hour, or $20 to $50 per person for a half or full day of work, is generally considered suitable for outstanding service.

In addition to deciding on a formula, you might also base how much you tip on the scale of your move and the distance. For instance, if you're moving a small studio apartment just across town, you might not tip as much per hour as you would for moving a large home's worth of belongings several states over.

If the team provides exceptional service, you might consider providing a more generous tip in addition to a positive review. This shows that their services were greatly appreciated.

Tipping your movers shouldn't be complicated. These formulas are ones you can use for a local move or long-distance move and for first-rate service or when working on a tight budget.

Factors to Consider When Tipping

Once you've decided which formula to use when determining how much to tip, there are a few other factors you should consider. For instance, how much should you tip a moving crew if the workers have to climb multiple flights of stairs? How much do you tip for a long-distance move, compared to a short-distance one?

Here are several factors to keep in mind when deciding how much to tip:

  • Performance: How quickly did your movers work? What was the level of professionalism, and did they take extra precautions with your belongings?
  • Complexity of the move: Did the movers have to go up and down stairs? Was there a particularly narrow staircase? Was it very hot, raining, or snowing during your move? Moving a few boxes versus a few different rooms full of boxes is a big difference as well.
  • The size and type of items: Did your movers handle heavy furniture? Were they hauling large or fragile items that required additional care?
  • Distance: Did you move just a few minutes across town or several states over? You might tip long-distance movers more than short-distance ones.
  • Number of crew members: How many people were involved in your move?
  • Damage or delay: Were any of your belongings damaged? Were there any delays that the moving team may have caused?

More than one of these factors might apply to your move. For instance, you might have movers who worked very quickly under challenging conditions, like several flights of stairs. This might prompt you to tip a higher-than-average amount to your moving crew.

Cash, Card, or Other Ways to Tip

Now that you've decided how much to tip, it's time to figure out how you'll tip. You can either tip movers in cash or a card. Tipping in cash is customary. However, you can talk to the moving company about non-cash tipping alternatives for movers, such as a credit card or a cash app. Often, a company allows you to tip via credit card or even a check, which will go to the company and then be distributed to the movers.

Another option would be to tip in non-cash alternatives. For instance, you could give movers gift cards or provide food or drinks while they work. It's also good to promise to leave a good review for their services; however, this should not be in place of a tip. You might tip family members with food.

But professional full service movers do more than just move boxes. They make sure boxes are labeled, handle large items with care, carefully pack moving trucks, and more. The work that professional movers do is much more than what friends or family would provide. For that reason, consider providing tips instead of just food and drinks.

You could also provide the movers with a combination of a cash tip and food and drinks. Avoid providing anything homemade. Instead, opt for pre-packaged food or food delivered directly from a restaurant. Pizza and bottled water or sports drinks are always safe choices.

When and How to Deliver the Tip

The next step is to decide when to tip movers. The best practice when tipping moving company workers is to tip at the end of the move after you've had a chance to evaluate the service in full. At that time, hand cash to each individual mover if possible and thank them for their hard work and heavy lifting. You can avoid a lot of awkwardness by having your tip ready ahead of time. Break bills to ensure you have the right amount for each mover.

Red Flags - When NOT to Tip

There are a few instances when you should think twice before tipping moving professionals. If you find that your movers were unprofessional, either directly to you or when working in your home, you might ask yourself, "Should I tip my movers?" The answer is probably not. The same goes for movers with a poor attitude or those who ignore specific instructions that you've left, like packaging fragile items separately.

Another reason you might decide to forgo a tip is that some of your belongings were damaged. This is why you should always tip at the end of a move rather than at the beginning. This gives you a chance to fully evaluate a moving team's work before finalizing how much you'll tip.

If a moving company asks you to tip upfront for their services, think twice before hiring them. You should also consider not hiring moving companies that are difficult to communicate with. If they are tough to get a hold of before you hire them, they're likely to be difficult to contact during your move as well, which can lead to delays and issues.

Tipping During Holidays or in Extreme Conditions

There are some circumstances when you should consider tipping more than usual. For instance, when tipping movers during holidays, you might consider tipping a little extra. Not only are the movers working around the holidays, but they're likely also dealing with extra traffic that can make the move more challenging.

It's also a good idea to throw in a little extra during extreme weather, like high temperatures, rain, or snow. Sometimes you can plan your move around times of high heat or cold. But other times, you simply can't. These conditions make the movers' jobs that much harder. A higher tip can be a good way to show your appreciation for their hard work. This is especially true if they take extra care to keep your belongings dry or if they continue to work quickly despite the conditions.

Tipping is a personal decision and should be based on the quality of your move and the effort of the movers. If tipping isn't feasible, consider leaving a stellar review to show your appreciation. If you can't tip the average amounts suggested above, you can still tip a lower amount or tip in food or drinks for the movers.

However, if you do want to tip, it's a good idea to factor your tip into the budget during the moving process. Before moving day, prepare the cash for the tip and set it aside somewhere you can easily find it. This will help you avoid any unnecessary stress on the moving day.
